Attorney.org believes that whether your organization promotes women’s rights, minority rights, youth rights, or any other category, it is ultimately in the pursuit of fundamental human rights — rights that we, as a member of the human race, are guaranteed at birth.

Therefore, as part of our ongoing human rights campaign, Attorney.org is highlighting The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign, along with the groups and individuals involved, in the hopes of generating greater awareness for the organizations and individuals who have devoted themselves to bringing violence against women to the forefront of global attention.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence was deliberately chosen to begin on Nov 25, the International Day Against Violence Against Women and end on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day. The dates were selected in order to symbolically link violence against women to human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights.

16 Days Campaign – Background

Each year since 1991, tens of thousands of activists from every region of the world have taken part in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign. The campaign’s central messages – women’s rights are human rights and violence against women constitutes a violation of human rights – have been a rallying call of the women’s movement. Recognizing that violence against women affects people from every country, race, class, culture, and religion, the 16 Days Campaign provides an opportunity for activists to work together in solidarity and draw upon this period of heightened international attention to gain support for their local efforts.

This year’s campaign theme is: Commit – Act – Demand: We CAN End Violence Against Women!

Commit: We are all responsible

While honoring and celebrating the achievements made towards ending VAW is a worthwhile festivity, the Center for Women’s Global Leadership @ Rutgers also encourages broad-based community participation by emphasizing that everyone has a role to play. We all have a responsibility to end gender-based violence together as women, girls, men, boys, and individuals of all generations, religions, occupations, sexual orientations, abilities, political persuasions, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Act: We can all make a difference

The anti-violence against women movement provides one of the best illustrations of how local activism can translate into global action. During the 2009 16 Days Campaign, CWGL encourages individuals, organizations, governments, etc. to take action on the commitments they have made to ending VAW. Each commitment — be it a personal pledge to speak out, a local or national law, an international convention or resolution –NOW is the time to act on these promises. Every action, no matter how big or small, can make a difference!

Demand: We are all accountable

At the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, women’s organizations from around the world met with government representatives and collaboratively produced the Beijing Platform for Action – one of the most forward-thinking government negotiated documents on women’s rights to date. 2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Conference on Women. Therefore, we must all demand implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, as well as other key documents, and demand state accountability for ending impunity, allocating adequate resources, and implementing good laws and national action plans to address VAW.

Since its inception in 1991, The 16 Days Campaign has been used as an organizing strategy by individuals and groups around the world in the fight against violence against women by:

* Raising awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international levels

* Strengthening local work around violence against women

* Establishing a clear link between local and international work to end violence against women

* Providing a forum in which organizers can develop and share new and effective strategies

* Demonstrating the solidarity of women around the world organizing against violence against women

* Creating tools to pressure governments to implement promises made to eliminate violence against women

Attorney.org – Notable 16 Days Campaigns

Attorney.org contacted every organization in the United States that participated in the 16 Days Campaign since its inception and selected several to highlight using a formula that factored in not only the scope of the organization’s campaign, but factors involving the human element. For example, PAVE was selected because of how its founder, Angela Rose, used her personal experiences involving violence against women as the catalyst for creating her organization. Here they are:

PAVE – Paving the Way

PAVE uses art, education and action to shatter the silence of sexual violence. PAVE’s initiatives have been implemented in over 55 cities in the US and in 3 countries. Founded by Angela Rose, PAVE will celebrate their 10 year anniversary in 2010. PAVE has launched an international affiliate program as they continue to partner with other organizations in an effort to create a cohesive network.

The organization’s founder, Angela Rose, in response to her abduction and sexual assault, turned a community into a group of proactive citizens, and then spearheaded the movement that culminated with the passage of the 1998 Sexually Violent Persons Commitment Act in Illinois. She founded PAVE (Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment) in 2001.

16 Days Programs:

Binding Project

The Binding Project is an international art empowerment campaign where participants write a word of empowerment on plastic zip tie bracelets. PAVE is currently collecting thousands of binding bracelets to be included in an installation art piece. These zip ties are what was used to bind the hands of PAVE Founder Angela Rose behind her back when she was abducted from a shopping mall parking lot.

Join Team Ten

Shatter the silence of sexual violence by hosting a TEAM TEN Listening Party with your friends, family and/or colleagues. Critically acclaimed poet, Steven Connell, created ground-breaking poetry, and we will provide links for the exclusive recordings to play during your listening party. Connell is one of the most prophetic and talented poets of this generation and has been seen on HBO, MTV, ABC World news, Good Morning America, MSNBC’s Hardball, and many others. Steve performed a poem for PAVE at a gala in Los Angeles that was life changing for many people.

Removing the Mask Campaign

This is an interactive art project where people decorate masks as an invitation for us to realize the individual MASKs that we hide behind each day. Project creator, PAVE’s Jaime Gill, believes that the MASKs that we wear are our Mistakes, Assumptions, Scars, and Knowledge of our true selves; and because we don’t feel that we will be accepted by our friends, families, and/or society. Removing the Mask is a thought provoking and engaging exercise that will cause vulnerability and encourage forgiveness, empowerment, and healing!

Consent Coaster Campaign

PAVE created a Consent Coaster Campaign. These coasters were distributed to bars in an effort to raise awareness on date rape and alcohol. Moreover, they work to educate that consent is defined as a freely given YES, not the absence of a NO.

Transition to Survivor Documentary

PAVE released a powerful documentary titled Transition to Survivor that features sexual assault survivors who tell emotional stories about their personal experiences, from reporting the crime to dealing with the aftermath of the violence.

Art for Awareness
Combining artists, musicians, advocates and poets, these events can bring a sense of community and empowerment when shattering the silence of sexual violence. From a coffee shop in Sarasota to a Brooklyn mural project, PAVE features creative events to engage people in dialogue on the issue of violence and provides an artistic voice to survivors as a means of healing.

Their international focus on countries that are out of connectivity, which also tend to be the places where violence against women is most rampant or even accepted, and SATELLIFE’s work towards improving technology in those regions, thus promoting the free flow of educational information, were major factors in their selection.

AED-SATELLIFE, formally known as SATELLIFE, was created in 1987 to bridge the digital and information divides. They are now part of the Academy for Education Development – a leader in international development, which expands SATELLIFE’s own reach toward this goal.
For more than two decades, the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) has worked to end violence against women and children around the world. Instrumental in developing the landmark Violence Against Women Act passed by Congress in 1994, the FVPF has continued to break new ground by reaching new audiences including men and youth, promoting leadership within communities to ensure that violence prevention efforts become self-sustaining, and transforming the way health care providers, police, judges, employers and others address violence.

East Timor and Indonesia Action Network

The East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN) was founded in November 1991 to support genuine self-determination and human rights for the people of East Timor in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 1960 United Nations General Assembly Resolution on Decolonization, and Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on East Timor. Their primary focus has been to change US foreign policy and raise public awareness to support justice and self-determination and now genuine independence for East Timor and human rights in Indonesia. In February 2001, ETAN revised its mission statement to reflect East Timor’s coming independence.

A just released survey of emergency room visits by the Timor-Leste Armed Violence Assessment (TLAVA) found that nearly “one-fifth of all women presenting at ERs in Dili and Baucau hospitals were recorded as victims of domestic violence; the proportion rose to one-third for women aged 20–39 years.”

16 Days Projects:

Working with various UN agencies – including UNMIT and UNIFEM – that are working in Timor-Leste with the Timor-Leste government and local women’s and other groups, ETAN will be participating this year in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. In a prelude, violence against women was highlighted on November 3, Timor-Leste’s National Women’s Day. Accoring to UNIFEM, “Vows to end violence against women were made by dignitaries and attendees alike.”

Postcard Campaign
A postcard campaign to raise awareness that domestic violence is a crime was launched. The cards say “Domestic Violence is now a public crime. Anyone can report it. You could go to jail.” Awareness of domestic violence has grown in Timor-Leste since independence. A new comprehensive criminal code, which made domestic violence a public crime, entered into force. Parliament, spurred by a campaign by women’s groups, is now considering comprehensive legislation on domestic violence.

Global Kids

Global Kids’ programs address the urgent need for young people to possess leadership skills and an understanding of complex global issues to succeed in the 21 st century workplace and participate in the democratic process.

Global Kids’ success is clear. By educating students about international affairs and their role in the policymaking process, GK has been able to motivate and inspire urban public school students, many of whom have been labeled at risk of school drop out, to succeed in school and become campus leaders. Annually, more than 90% of the seniors in GK’s leadership programs graduate from high school and the majority attend college with scholarships.

16 Days Projects:

Global Kids, the premier youth development organization, based in New York City, will engage Global Kids students in two activities that will raise awareness around Female Genital Mutilation. On December 7, Global Kids will host a special citywide event coordinated in collaboration with representatives of V-Day, at their Center for Global Leadership, Global Kids’ headquarters, to speak with about 30-40 Global Kids students about the work they have done on the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Students will learn about the economic and cultural implications for FGM and begin to identify ways that they can become involved by supporting work that is already taking place or developing their own social action campaigns.

There is also another activity being planned during the 16 Days of Activism by Global Kids’ youth leader, Gabriel Wahab, who is planning an event at his high school, the School for International Studies, to raise awareness around the issue of Female Genital Mutilation. The event will include a panel of guest speakers on the topic, a screening of a film/documentary, and a call to action to raise funds. It has the potential to reach about 500-1,000 students at the school. Gabriel is seeking to raise funds to support a center for girls who have escaped FGM and early marriage in the Kajiado region of Kenya. This summer Gabriel had the opportunity to travel to Kenya with four other Global Kids students and staff as part of Global Kid’s Human Rights International Project. While in Kenya, Gabriel and his peers met with the founder of the center and two young girls who live there; one was a victim of FGM and escaped before she was married off, the other had escaped both FGM and marriage.

MADRE

Over the past 26 years, MADRE has built a network of community-based women’s organizations worldwide. This network encompasses thousands of women and families – in Sudan, Iraq, Nicaragua, Cuba, Haiti, Guatemala, Kenya, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Palestine and elsewhere – who are on the frontlines of our global crisis. Yet, as part of the MADRE network, they know that change is not only possible – it is already happening.

16 Days Projects:

MADRE created the Afghan Women’s Survival Fund to enable women who are threatened with violence to escape to safety. The Fund supports an underground rescue network of women committed to providing shelter and secret transport to women who have been targeted because they dare to speak out for human rights.

Dwa Fanm

Dwa Fanm (meaning “Women’s Rights” in Creole) started as a volunteer-run community-based organization in 1999 when a group of eight Haitian and American women from diverse backgrounds met to discuss the state of women’s rights in Haitian immigrant communities in the United States and in Haiti. Having established itself as a human rights organization, Dwa Fanm’s mission is to empower all women and girls with the freedom to define and control their own lives. Through service, education, advocacy and grassroots programs, Dwa Fanm works to end discrimination, violence, and other forms of injustice in New York City and abroad.

16 Days Projects:

Program on the connections between domestic violence and HIV/AIDS in women’s lives.

There will also be an electronic discussion starting on Tuesday, November 24 continuing until Wednesday, November 25th. This discussion will allow activists, social workers, advocates, and others to learn more about how to address and end violence against women in the Haitian and other Black Caribbean communities.

The World Resources Institute is an environmental think tank that goes beyond research to find practical ways to protect the earth and improve people’s lives.

Their mission is to move human society towards a lifestyle that protects the Earth’s environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations.

The organization works around four key programs:

Climate Protection

This program works to protect the global climate system from further harm due to emissions of greenhouse gases and help humanity and the natural world adapt to unavoidable climate change.

By conducting independent research and developing innovative policy and business options, WRI is promoting an effective international response to climate change.

In particular, WRI aims to:

Develop robust international agreements and US policies to protect the climate system.

Foster widespread investment in climate-friendly energy and transportation technologies.

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions through clean alternatives supported by businesses, governments, nongovernmental organizations, and the public.

Governance

WRI collaborates with institutions and civil society organizations worldwide to ensure that decisions about natural resources reflect environmental values as well as people’s rights and interests.

These are some of their programs:

The Access Initiative–the largest global network dedicated to ensuring that people have the right and ability to influence decisions about the natural resources that sustain their communities.

Electricity Governance Initiative–a collaboration of civil society, policy-makers, regulators, and sector actors to promote open, transparent, and accountable decision-making processes in the electricity sector.

Poverty, Environment, and Distributional Equity–promote equitable allocation and distribution policies for revenues from ecosystem goods and services.

Decentralization and Natural Resources–promote representative local government as a tool to improve environmental justice, reduce poverty, and raise the efficiency and equity of decision-making.

Mapping Poverty and Natural Resource Revenues–overlay data about geographical distribution of poverty, natural resources and fiscal transfers to improve development approaches and outcomes.

Market and Enterprise

WRI’s Markets and Enterprise Group produces economically sound policies, bold vision, and practical solutions in collaboration with the business community. To channel the private sector to incorporate environmental and social opportunities into core business strategies, they employ the following approaches:

Build Market Demand: Expand the market for goods and services that protect the climate and ecosystems

Create Sustainable Enterprises: Enable entrepreneurs and corporations to develop profitable business approaches to climate change, ecosystem degradation, and improving people’s lives.

Establish Economic Incentives: Secure policies that use price incentives to drive efficiency, business investment in environmentally superior technologies, and growth of new markets.

Promote Green Investing: Incorporate environmental value and risk into investment decisions as a means to influence corporate performance and strategy.

Train New Leaders: Ensure that current and future executives view sustainability as a business driver and have the managerial skills to deliver financial, environmental, and societal value.

People and Ecosystems

WRI’s goal is to reverse rapid degradation of ecosystems and assure their capacity to provide humans with needed goods and services. WRI’s People & Ecosystems Program creates innovative, practical, and decision-relevant solutions that aim to halt and reverse ecosystem degradation while sustaining their capacity to provide humans with the goods and services we need.

WRI has over 50 active projects working on aspects of global climate change, sustainable markets, ecosystem protection, and environmentally responsible governance. WRI is unique in its ability to create solutions that protect the Earth, and in doing so, improves people’s lives. There are many ways to support their cause, from employer matching gifts to gifts of securities or even donations to specific funds within the Institute.
Trees have an irreplaceable role in maintaining the health of our Earth’s ecosystems and atmosphere. While humans and other animals breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, trees and other plants capture and store carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air. Ultimately, trees not only help keep our lungs filled with oxygen, but play a crucial role in reducing harmful carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. In fact, forests are the largest forms of carbon storage, or sinks, in the United States. This is part of the reason why our atmosphere has suffered so much over recent years: millions of trees have been cleared with no replacements planted. It is estimated that deforestation, especially of rainforests, is responsible for roughly a fifth of global carbon dioxide emissions from human activities. Overall, planting trees is one of the cheapest, most effective means of removing excessive carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

American Forests is a world leader in planting trees for environmental restoration, a pioneer in the science and practice of urban forestry, and a primary communicator of the benefits of trees and forests.

American Forests is about action, and so its major campaigns focus on taking actions for healthy ecosystems. Today, the organization’s primary campaigns are “Tree-Planting for Environmental Restoration” and “Reversing the National Urban Tree Deficit,” which encourage people to improve rural, suburban, and urban ecosystems by planting and caring for trees that provide important environmental and economic benefits including pure water, clean air, and wildlife habitat.

Over the past 20 years, the organization has planted over 25 million trees, and will plant an estimated 4 million trees this year alone!

For 70 years, American Forests has also run and maintained the National Register of Big Trees, documenting the largest of over 800 species of trees from all over the country. Topping the list as the biggest tree in the U.S. is the towering “General Sherman” giant sequoia, which has a whopping 1,020 inch waist line and stands 274 feet tall. The latest, most comprehensive and up-to-date edition of the Register will be released in the spring of 2010.

Although its educational and restoration operations take place mostly in the United States, American Forests also has several projects under way in China and South/Central America. The organization’s recent work in the States includes restoring forests damaged by the California wildfires, and collaborating with major companies, including IKEA and Chegg, to reduce their use of paper and plastic.

American Forests is the nation’s oldest conservation group, celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2010. It is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and any gifts, donations, and grants may be tax deductible.

PennFuture (Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future) works to create a just future where nature, communities and the economy thrive. The organization enforces environmental laws and advocates for the transformation of public policy, public opinion and the marketplace to restore and protect the environment and safeguard public health. PennFuture advances effective solutions for the problems of pollution, sprawl and global warming; mobilizes citizens; crafts compelling communications; and provides excellent legal services and policy analysis.

According to the PennFuture website, its current work focuses on the following areas:

Working to replace old outdated dirty sources of power with clean renewable Pennsylvania-made electricity.

Fighting factory farm pollution;

Helping to stop damage from mining;

Protecting watersheds from sprawl and pollution;

Reducing global warming pollution;

Watchdogging state government and

Providing $2 million per year of free legal services to protect the environment.
In those areas, PennFuture has already won victories in several “David vs. Goliath” type opponents:

Standing up to the polluters, fighting for a strong state rule to clean up toxic mercury pollution from the state’s power plants;

Leading the fight for passage of a new law that requires the state’s electricity providers to supply ever larger amounts of renewable energy to their customers;

Winning $80 million to support clean, renewable electricity in utility cases;

Convincing Governor Rendell to support a nearly $1 billion bond issue for environmental funding;

Saving water and streams, parks and undeveloped pristine areas around the state.

The DNA sequences between humans and chimpanzees are 98.5% similar; the similarity is 99.9% between humans. As we know today, DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms. Unfortunately, for humans, that 0.1% difference fuels the hate behind genocide, war and crime.

To achieve universal peace, humans must place their allegiance within the human race before their ethnicity, creed, or religion. We must place the rights of every person on the planet, regardless of gender, ethnicity, social standing or religion, above our own.

This is not a task to be undertaken by the lone wolf – there are simply too many subsections that the term ‘human rights’ can be broken up into. That is why the Attorney.org Equality, Justice, and Peace Network has compiled the following list of human rights organizations in order to provide our users with the most prominent names pursuing worthy causes. We hope that you can find an organization pursuing the same cause as you and that you choose to stand alongside them in their mission.

We have categorized each advocacy organization according to the continent that their work focuses on:

Water Matters @ Columbia is the blog of the Columbia Water Center. The Center is leading intellectual inquiry into the assessment, prediction and solution of the growing scarcity of fresh water. The Water Center conducts research on water shortages in some of the most challenging settings in the world, and also acts as the focal point for water-related research at Columbia.

Founded in January 2008, the Columbia Water Center is committed to understanding and addressing both the role and scarcity of fresh water in the 21st century. The Water Center was established for the purpose of studying the diminishing levels of fresh water and creating innovative sustainable and global solutions.

The Water Center’s work is founded on the principle that meaningful improvements in water quality and access depend on resolving increasing water shortages. The greatest improvements in water sustainability stem from concentrating on the sector with the greatest consumption – the agricultural sector. Much of their research, therefore, focuses on improving efficiency of agricultural water use, especially in the developing world where water problems are most prevalent.

The Water Matters @ Columbia blog aims to be an informative and conversational forum for everyone -– academics, students, and interested amateurs –- to discuss the current water-related issues around the world.

The Earth Policy Institute (EPI), founded in 2001, is dedicated to providing a vision of a sustainable global economy and a roadmap of how to get from here to there, what we call Plan B, the alternative to business as usual. EPI works at the global level simply because no country acting alone can stabilize climate or preserve the earth’s biological diversity. EPI’s unique global vision often allows it to see trends that more specialized organizations cannot, its research generates attention.

Plan B is a comprehensive global strategy for reversing the trends that are fast undermining our future. It aims to stabilize climate, stabilize population, eradicate poverty, and restore the economy’s natural support systems. It prescribes a worldwide cut in net carbon emissions of 80 percent by 2020 to stop atmospheric CO2 concentrations from exceeding 400 parts per million, thus keeping the future global temperature rise to a minimum. Failure to reach any one of these goals will likely mean failure to reach the others as well.
Their founder, Lester Brown, was called “one of the world’s most influential thinkers” by the Washington Post. The Telegraph of Calcutta refers to him as the “guru of the environmental movement.” In 1986, the Library of Congress requested his personal papers noting that his writings “have already strongly affected thinking about problems of world population and resources.”

In 1974, with support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Lester Brown founded the Worldwatch Institute, the first research institute devoted to the analysis of global environmental issues. While there he launched the Worldwatch Papers, the annual State of the World reports, World Watch magazine, a second annual entitled Vital Signs: The Trends That are Shaping Our Future, and the Environmental Alert book series.

In May 2001, he founded the Earth Policy Institute to provide solutions through its publications—books, Plan B Updates, Eco-Economy Indicators, and Book Bytes. In November 2001, he published Eco-Economy: Building an Economy for the Earth, which was hailed by E.O. Wilson as “an instant classic.” The most recent book is Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization. David Roberts of Grist said, “It’s the best summation of humanity’s converging ecological problems and the best roadmap to solving them, all in one compact package.” All of their publications are available online for free downloading—a phenomenal bargain—along with supporting data.
According to their website, EPI’s goals are

To provide a global plan (Plan B) for moving the world onto an environmentally and economically sustainable path.

To provide examples demonstrating how the plan would work.

To keep the media, policymakers, academics, environmentalists, and other decision-makers focused on the process of building a Plan B economy.

People can help by getting involved. Depending on the person, that can mean a lot of things. Some people simply give money; others only give time, by writing elected officials on critical issues, helping out with mailings, tree plantings or whatever urgent matter needs our attention that day.

Earth Policy Institute is an independent, nonprofit environmental research organization supported by financial contributions from foundations and individuals, along with internal sources of income such as publication sales. Therefore your support is invaluable to our efforts. Please consider making a donation.

Founded in 1947, Defenders of Wildlife is one of the country’s leaders in pragmatic science-based, results-oriented wildlife conservation. They stand out in their commitment to saving imperiled wildlife and championing the Endangered Species Act, the landmark law that protects our rarest wildlife.

A message from their president best describes the purpose behind their mission:

“Our nation’s wildlife and wild places are precious gifts that enrich our planet and sustain us. But nearly everywhere, natural habitats—home to all kinds of creatures—are being destroyed to make way for new shopping malls, roads and housing developments. Meanwhile, in the halls of Congress, some politicians are eager to open public lands to oil drilling. Others are pressing to unravel the Endangered Species Act, our country’s pre-eminent wildlife conservation law. And beyond our borders, millions of animals are being exploited or killed illegally each year—becoming pets, food or souvenirs. With so many threats, concerned citizens are coming to the defense of America’s wildlife, and Defenders of Wildlife is proud to be a leader in the fight to preserve our nation’s animals and plants for generations to come.”

Here are some of their success stories that inspired Attorney.org to highlight them as part of our current campaign:

Safe Passage for Colorado Wildlife

In early 2009, Defenders of Wildlife called on its supporters to take action to urge their state’s Governor and Department of Transportation to make safe passage for wildlife a top priority by devoting a portion of the infrastructure improvement funding it receives as part of the federal government’s stimulus package to the construction of wildlife crossings. Two ’shovel-ready’ projects will be built using recently approved federal stimulus funds.

These strategically-placed wildlife crossings and fencing will allow deer, elk, bears, mountain lions, imperiled Canada lynx, and other animals to travel safely under or over the highway and access the food, mates and quality habitat they need to survive.

Reprieve for Sea Turtles

Through grassroots activism and legal advocacy, Defenders of Wildlife has raised the alarm about bottom longline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, where threatened and endangered sea turtles have been drowning and dying at alarming rates the victims of razor sharp hooks on fishing lines that span anywhere from four to nine nautical miles.

To save these turtles, the Defenders legal team engaged in intense negotiations with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in spring 2009, taking legal action and mobilizing nearly 50,000 caring Defenders supporters to speak out in favor of closing the bottom longline fishery in the Gulf of Mexico.

In April 2009, Defenders of Wildlife efforts paid off in a huge victory for threatened and endangered sea turtles. The NMFS ordered a 6-month emergency closure of the bottom longline fishery in the Gulf of Mexico, providing a crucial lifeline to protect the lives of imperiled sea turtles from capture and death in the fishery.

Mexican Wolf Recovery Back on Track

Mexican wolves are the most endangered wolf in the world, saved from total extinction only by captive breeding and a reintroduction program launched in 1998. Unfortunately, after the release of almost 100 captive-bred Mexican wolves in Arizona and New Mexico, just 52 wild wolves were counted in early 2009.

The wolves are doing their part to recover – forming packs, killing elk, pairing up and raising pups. But in 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) ceded responsibility for Mexican wolf recovery to an Adaptive Management Oversight Committee, which implemented a stringent “three-strikes” rule punishing wolves who prey on livestock. More than 45 wild wolves have been killed or removed from the wild based on that rule (known as Standard Operating Procedure 13, or SOP13).

In October 2008, Defenders of Wildlife filed a lawsuit challenging FWS’s decision to cede its responsibility, as well as the draconian “three-strikes” rule. On November 13, FWS settled the suit by reasserting its authority over the multiagency management team and scrapping SOP13, offering hope for a more scientific approach to Mexican wolf recovery.

Getting Northern Rockies Wolf Recovery Across the Finish Line

Defenders of Wildlife has been involved in helping wolves recover in the Northern Rockies region for more than 20 years. Defenders was the first wildlife organization to advocate for the return of the wolf to Yellowstone National Park, and our staff was there in 1995 and 1996 assisting in the effort to reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone and central Idaho.

Unfortunately, wolf recovery goals for the Northern Rockies were set long before anyone knew what a truly recovered wolf population should look like. For the past two years, the FWS has made premature efforts to take wolves off the endangered species list, leaving them vulnerable to poorly crafted state management plans that are not designed to maintain wolves as a a healthy, robust part of the Northern Rockies ecosystem. This fall, wolves in the Rockies are being hunted for the first time since they were reintroduced, and so far, nearly 190 wolves have been killed.

Defenders is in court seeking the return of federal protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies until a scientifically sound delisting plan is developed, and state management plans are in place that will ensure a healthy population of wolves across the region.

The Gulf Restoration Network (GRN) is a network of group sand individuals committed to empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf of Mexico. The GRN was formed in 1994 to raise awareness of environmental issues in Gulf States and to increase communication and coordination of member activities across the region. They play a pivotal role in providing its members and partners with the technical information, Gulf-wide networking opportunities, and communication that empowers local communities to successfully address the environmental threats that they face.

The GRN’s vision is that the Gulf of Mexico will continue to be a natural, economic, and recreational resource that is central to the culture and heritage of five states and three nations; and that the people of the region will be stewards of this vital but imperiled treasure, and they will assume the responsibility of returning the Gulf to its previous splendor.

The GRN team also pursues campaigns on priority issues affecting the entire Gulf region, including Natural Storm Defenses, the Dead Zone, Healthy Waters, Save our Cypress, Species at Risk, Wetland Protection, Gulf Energy, and Sustainable Fisheries.

Natural Storm Defenses

The Dead Zone
Working with partners throughout the Mississippi River Basin to ensure that there are protective policies in place to reduce the pollution that causes the Dead Zone to form in the Gulf of Mexico every summer.

Healthy Waters
Protecting and restoring waters throughout the Gulf of Mexico that are critical to recreation, fisheries, wildlife habitat, and drinking water.

Save Our Cypress
Saving our cypress forests from being clear-cut for cypress mulch.

Species At Risk
Safeguarding the habitat of threatened and endangered species throughout the Gulf region.

Wetland Protection
Protecting wetlands from reckless development, destructive logging practices and harmful U.S. Army Corps of Engineers policies.

Gulf Energy
Protecting the natural resources of the Gulf Region from the myriad effects and impacts of the oil & gas industry.

Sustainable Fisheries
Ensuring the sustainable management of the fisheries of the Gulf of Mexico.
