Global Kids was founded in 1989 and became an independent non-profit organization in 1993. Their mission is to educate and inspire urban youth to become successful students, global citizens and community leaders by engaging them in academically rigorous, socially dynamic, and content-rich learning experiences. The Global Kids programs address the urgent need for young people to possess leadership skills and an understanding of complex global issues to succeed in the 21st century workplace and participate in the democratic process. The following are a few ways that Global Kids aims to achieve their mission:

Power of Citizenry Program

The Global Kid’s Power of Citizenry Program provides students with an understanding of complex global issues that are shaping the world. With the help of GK, students create social action projects focusing on issues of concern. The program is being conducted at the following public high schools and the Citywide site at the Center for Global Leadership, at the GK Manhattan headquarters:

1. Brooklyn School of International Studies, Brooklyn
2. Edward Reynolds West Side High School, Manhattan
3. Fordham School for the Arts, Bronx
4. High School for Global Citizenship, Brooklyn
5. I.S. 229, Bronx
6. Long Island City High School, Astoria, Queens
7. Paul Robeson High School, Brooklyn
8. William Cullen Bryant High School, Queens
9. Wingate Campus High School, Brooklyn

The GK curriculum is grounded in almost 20 years of experience educating youths about world affairs, while developing 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication.

The Global Kids Programs Provide a Second Chance

In 2008, over 90% of high school seniors, many of whom were at risk of academic failure, in the Global Kids leadership programs graduated from high school, and close to 90% of them went on to college, many receiving financial support and scholarships because of experiences gained through Global Kids.

“Global Kids teaches you how to understand people, see things through their eyes, listen, ask questions, make people think and help others grow.” – Global Kids Participant
