Miami, Florida — On October 12, five teenagers set fifteen-year-old Michael Brewer on fire with rubbing alcohol in a dispute over $40 and then laughed as he jumped into the pool to extinguish the flames. According to witnesses, the boy had been fully engulfed in flames.
Now he is fighting for his life at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital burn Center in Miami.
“I’ve been to movies… and Hollywood hasn’t even thought of something like this,” said Dr. Nicholas Namias, medical director of the hospital.
Michael Brewer now spends his days on a balloon-type mattress to lessen pressure on his burns and stays hooked up to a ventilator just to breathe. Sixty-five percent of his body is covered with second and third degree burns.
He remains heavily sedated and the ventilator does not allow him to speak. His bandages must be replaced daily, which takes four hours.
The five teens who are accused of taking part in the attack appeared before a Broward County judge on Monday where state prosecutors were granted additional time to build their case. All five teens remain in custody.
Under Florida law, the four 15-year-old boys could be charged as adults and, if Brewer dies, the 13-year-old involved may also face adult criminal charges.
