Of all the water on earth, 97.5% is salt water, and of the remaining 2.5% fresh water, about 70% is frozen in the polar icecaps. The remaining 30% is moisture in the soil or lies in underground aquifers. Only about 0.0007% of the world’s fresh water is readily accessible for human use.

Therefore it is critical for us to take a global approach towards not only conserving our sources of water, from overuse as well as toxins and pollution. The following organizations have been selected by Attorney.org as leaders in their field:

1. The National Resources Defense Council http://www.nrdc.org/water/default.asp

NRDC is the nation’s most effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of 1.3 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of more than 350 lawyers, scientists and other professionals.

2. Clean Water Action [http://www.cleanwateraction.org/]

A national citizens’ organization working for clean, safe, and affordable water, and prevention of health-threatening pollution.

3. Center For Watershed Protection  [http://www.cwp.org/]

At the Center for Watershed Protection, they believe that the key to maintaining and improving the quality of our valuable water resources is to minimize the collective impacts of urbanization and other land use changes at the local watershed scale.

4. The Clean Water Network  [http://www.cleanwaternetwork.org/]

The Clean Water Network (CWN) is a coalition of more than 1,200 public interest organizations across the country, representing more than 5 million people, working together to strengthen and implement federal clean water and wetlands policy. It is the largest national coalition working to defend and strengthen the federal Clean Water Act.

Clean Water Fund’s mission is to develop strong grassroots environmental leadership and to bring together diverse constituencies to work cooperatively for changes that improve their lives, focused on health, consumer, environmental and community problems.

6. North American Lake Management Society  [http://www.nalms.org/nalmsnew/]

The focus of NALMS is on lake management for a wide variety of uses, but to do this it is necessary to address land use and other issues on a watershed level. The organization gets involved in land, streams, wetland and even estuaries in the course of their activities, as lakes are a logical endpoint in systems that incorporate all of these resource types.

Co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org is a nonprofit organization that has transformed hundreds of communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and sanitation.

8. Project Clean Water [http://www.projectcleanwater.org/]

Project Clean Water was initiated in July 2000 to provide a broad and inclusive forum for exploring water quality issues of regional significance.

9. Global Water [http://www.globalwater.org/]

Global Water is an international, non-profit humanitarian organization founded in 1982.Their focus is on creating safe water supplies, sanitation facilities and hygiene-related facilities for rural villagers in developing countries.

10. Charity Water [http://www.charitywater.org/]

charity: water is a non profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.
